Replacing endless practice with real activity on the field, the Skaneateles baseball team pushed through a pair of games last week, splitting them.

The Lakers improved to 2-0 last Monday against Union Springs, relying on the strong pitching arm of Zach Augustine to prevail 4-1.

Augustine went the full seven innings, giving up just two hits and a third-inning run, but didn’t grab the lead until Skaneateles broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Two runs an inning later brought some insurance.

In all, the Lakers had nine hits, including Owen Stokes-Cawley’s triple and doubles from Augustine and Nick Pesarchick. Jared Armory had two RBIs as Stokes-Cawley also drove in a run.

From there, the Lakers moved on to last Tuesday’s Homer Tournament, and kept up its hot play, starting with a hard-fought 6-4 win over Onondaga.

They went back and forth, Skaneatlees seeing leads of 2-1 and 3-2 get away as the Tigers scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to pull in front, 4-3.

Skaneateles answered, though, with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth, then preserved its lead by having Jake Bird pitch two scoreless innings in relief of Nolan Cunningham.

On the offensive side, Phil Weiss tripled and earned an RBI as Armory and Jake Carvalho also drove in runs. Defense proved important as Skaneateles, held to five hits, made just one errors, as opposed to four OCS errors.

What followed, in the game against Tully, was Jake Rothenburg pitching a no-hitter as the Lakers blanked the Black Knights 11-0.

It really ended in the top of the first inning, when Skaneateles tagged Tully pitching for eight runs, on its way to a 14-hit afternoon. Weis and Armory each finished with two RBIs as Bird, Augustine, Carvalho, Pesarchick and Jon Chapman also took turns driving in runs.

Meanwhile, Rothenburg spent inning after inning taking down the Black Knights’ hitters on the way to the first no-hitter of his varsity career.

This followed the April 11 opener where Skaneateles went to Waterloo and unleashed lots of offense in a 27-3 victory.

As if three-run rallies in the second and third innings weren’t enough, Skaneateles put together a 12-run fourth inning that made it 18-0 and out of hand.

All told, the Lakers had 19 hits. Jon Chapman doubled and drove in four runs, while Armory also had four RBIs. Pesarchick had three RBIs as Augustine, Stokes-Cawley, Jake Carvalho and Phil Weiss each got two RBIs. Jake Rothenburg, Dan Dobrovsky, Bird, Sean Cooney and Paul Hamilton also joined the parade, each driving in one run.
