Though it has been a rough winter for the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill girls basketball team, it could at least smile for one night knowing that it had beaten its biggest rival with a spectacular comeback. Way behind after three quarters at Oneida last Monday night, the Red Devils did everything right down the stretch and stunned the Indians 45-42. Nothing that happened early suggested any kind of comeback. Oneida, coming off back-to-back wins over Holland Patent and New Hartford, appeared well on its way to three in a row when it started on a 15-7 run. Over the course of the next two periods, the Indians steadily added to that margin. Beth Kann worked her way to 17 points and 17 rebounds, with Courtney Casler adding 12 points and Erika Newton picking up seven points. So as the third quarter wound down, VVS was down, 36-18, which only made what happened next that much more shocking. All of a sudden, Megan Reed and Courtney Smith started burying outside shots, and the margin disappeared as VVS went on a 13-0 run in the final period to make it 38-34. Following a Kann free throw, Leanne Doolen and Reed both converted baskets to make it 39-38. Casler converted a free throw, but Tracy Schiebel’s jumper with 2:10 left tied the game, 40-40, so VVS had gone on a 22-4 run in less than seven minutes to catch up. They traded baskets, then Smith got fouled with 46 seconds left. Calmly, Smith made both free throws, and the Red Devils went in front, 44-42. When Casler missed two free throws of her own with 21.7 seconds to play and Kann also could not convert, VVS got the ball back. Nikki Schiebel’s free throw created the final margin. In all, Reed had 17 points, a career high, which included five 3-pointers. Smith added 12 points, with Schiebel earning eight points.
