Just before it was supposed to head back to local action, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill wrestling team competed in the Stan Elinsky Tournament at Deposit on Jan. 3, finishing ninth in a 15-team field with 94 points. Newark Valley won with 200 points.
Dylan Kavanaugh won at 96 pounds, shutting out Scott Stafford (Sidney) 8-0, while Dan Walts (119 pounds) dropped a close 119-pound final to Evan Borst (Duanesburg) 2-1. Kyle Reader was third at 215 pounds, beating Steve Kurandy (Duanesburg) 6-2 in the consolation match.
Then the weather took over, postponing home meets against Camden and Sherburne-Earlville on back-to-back nights, as well as Oneida’s visit to Whitesboro.
The Indians would wrestle Saturday at the Little Falls Invitational and fare quite well, taking third place with 143 points. Only Corcoran (261 points) and the host Mounties, with 209 points, would fare better.
Matt Harp gave Oneida its lone championship, at 145 pounds, when he pinned Corcoran’s My’Quan Pringle just 1:21 into their title match.
Jeff Clark reached the 125-pound final, only to fall to Pat Cost (Marcellus) 15-7. At 152 pounds, Danny Collins reached the championship match, only to fall to Corcoran’s Lamont Fleming in a second period pin, while Carl Finch (189 pounds) dropped his final to Little Falls’ Derrick Snell.
As the Indians prepare to face New Hartford on Wednesday, VVS would face Holland Patent before going to Carthage for Saturday’s North Country Duals.
