Already with a victory in the books, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team faced a more difficult test on Oct. 10 when it took on West Genesee.
But the Bees were able to pull it out, 4-3, in large measure due to the single point earned by Paige Tromblee against the Wildcats’ Angelina Llanos, a 2019 state tournament participant.
Tromblee won the opening set 6-3, and though Llanos took the second set 6-2, it turned around again in the third set, Tromblee prevailing by that same 6-2 margin.
Already, Eva Smith had shut out Ava Amodio 6-0, 6-0, making up for Brooke Tutor’s 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Katie Viau as two more points were needed in doubles.
Audrey Benton and Ayla Kalfass got their own 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sarah Bacon and Elianna Cui as Jessica Bilynsky and Julia Penfield also won in straight sets.
Elsewhere, Reagan Doan and Ella Tromblee took a 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Alyssa Congel and Margaret Mello as Audrey Benton and Hannah Gould lost to Kayla Latone and Isabelle Wells 6-4, 6-2.
It proved a bit easier in last Wednesday’s match against Liverpool, where B’ville did enough in both singles and doubles to outlast the Warriors 4-2.
Pushed in first singles, Tutor still beat Diana Kozenyatko 7-5, 6-4, with Smith routing Meghan Bell 6-0, 6-2 as Paige Tromblee dropped a three-set epic to Gabby Underwood 6-2, 2-6 10-7.
B’ville claimed two of the three doubles points, too. Ella Tromblee and Julia Quinn beat Maiya Fitzgibbons and Chen Ying Lee 6-3, 6-1, while Bylinsky paired with Ayla Kalfass to top Kelly Geiwitz and Ashleigh Rosen 6-3, 6-2.
And this led to Thursday’s showdown with Fayetteville-Manlius, long the team B’ville has tried to knock off the league and sectional thrones.
Tutor and Paige Tromblee paired up in doubles to blank Trisha Adavikolanu and Emma Zogg 6-0, 6-0, but the Hornets claimed every other point in a 6-1 victory, holding Smith, Benton and Ella Tromblee to just four games in six sets of singles play.
Quinn, paired with Kalfass, lost to Natalie Hugo and Brooke Tester 6-3, 6-2, while by those same scores Doan and Gould lost to Alexis Ahn and Angela Iskander.
B’ville is home this week for a pair of matches Wednesday for a rematch with WG and Friday to face Cicero-North Syracuse.
