The Cazenovia girls varsity volleyball team, which had a landmark year in 2017, including making it into the state Final Four championships, received a Believe to Achieve award last week. The awards, conducted by the Syracuse Sports Corporation, recognize meritorious contribution to the Central New York Sports Community.
The Cazenovia Volleyball team received the Barbara Henderson Female Team Award during the awards ceremony on Jan. 9.
“Believe to Achieve recognizes the accomplishments of individuals and teams in sports. One of Syracuse Sports Corporation’s goals is to improve the quality of life in Central New York through sports. The achievements recognized emulate this with the hard work, dedication, and teamwork guiding the individuals through life and providing an example for our community beyond sports,” said Mark Hills, Chairman of the Believe to Achieve committee.
The Cazenovia girls volleyball team had its most successful season in program history in 2017, making it into the state Final Four championships. The team earned the Section III Class B championship Nov. 4 at Fayetteville-Manlius, defeating Westhill in four sets.
On Nov. 9, they topped Section V champion Wayne in four sets in the first round of regional play. Two days later, the Lakers traveled to Daemen College in the Buffalo suburbs to face Section VI champion East Aurora in the Class C regional finals, and again won in four sets.
At the state championships in Glens Falls, Cazenovia was thwarted by Section II champion Hudson Falls and Section IV champion Owego in three consecutive sets as those two sides eventually advanced to the championship round.
