It proved a memorable experience for the West Genesee girls tennis doubles team of Mikayla Mannara and Katie Viau as they made it to the round of 16 in last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament at Sound Shore Indoor Tennis Club in Port Chester.
Place in the top quarter of the state bracket, Mannara and Viau went up against Union-Endicott’s Cailey Haynes and Bri Harmon in Saturday’s opening round. Taking just two sets, the Wildcats pair prevailed, 6-4, 6-2, over Haynes and Harmon.
This put Mannara and Viau into the round of 16, but going up against the no. 5 seed duo of Joyce Luo and Jess Bodewes (Pittsford Mendon) later on Saturday, they only managed three games in two sets, taking a 6-1, 6-2 defeat.
All three of Section III’s doubles representatives made it out of the opening round, including the Fayetteville-Manlius team of Katerina Atallah and Maggie Bonomo, who made it all the way to the quarterfinals.
Like with Mannara and Viau, Oneida’s duo of Lauren Skibitski and Briana Laureti won in the first round, only to fall in the round of 16 to no. 3 seed Katherine Orgieliewicz and Juliette Nask (Mamaroneck) in straight sets.
As for Section III’s singles players, Auburn’s Julia Wagner was injured and lost her opening-round match to Kortney McHale (Valley Central).
Meanwhile, F-M’s Kristina Liu and New Hartford’s Sarah Corasanti each won in the first round and fell in straight sets in the round of 16 – Liu to Merri-Kelly Hannity (Cold Spring Harbor), Corasanti to Rebecca Lim (Briarcliff).
