Baldwinsville — When they decide the Section III Class AA volleyball championships Tuesday night at the Cicero-North Syracuse High School gymnasium, Baldwinsville is once again, aiming for a sweep to match what it pulled off in 2014.
Again with the top seed, the undefeated girls Bees hosted no. 5 seed West Genesee in last Thursday’s AA semifinal and wasted little time putting away the Wildcats in straight sets.
Despite having a week off before the sectional match, B’ville had no rust at all. Instead, it rolled past WG 25-11 in the first set and claimed an even more lopsided second set 25-9 before closing it out, 25-12, in the third set.
On an active Bees back line, Hannah Klaben put together 22 assists, two blocks and two digs, plus a kill. Maddie Stone contributed 10 assists, while Emily Pascale earned 12 digs and two assists, and Skyler Parrow-Strong had four digs.
Up front, Abby May proved tough to stop, leading B’ville with both 16 kills and five aces, adding three digs. Kiannah Titus and Michelle Voyer each got eight kills, with Titus contributing four digs. Morgan Shibel had three kills and Riley Carlucci had two kills and two blocks.
B’ville would meet no. 2 seed Liverpool in the AA sectional final, the Warriors having swept Fayetteville-Manlius in the other AA semifinal, but having only claimed one set from the Bees in two head-to-head regular-season matches.
For the Baldwinsville boys team, the task was a bit taller, since taking the title would require beating top seed Cicero-North Syracuse on its home court and reversing the results of two regular-season meetings that the Northstars won in straight sets on Sept. 29 and Oct. 22.
One thing B’ville did accomplish, though, was turn around its results against Fayetteville-Manlius, whom it beat in a three-set battle during last Wednesday night’s semifinal at the Baker High School gym.
continued — The Hornets had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat B’ville in five sets on this same floor on Sept. 17, and though the Bees won the return engagement at F-M on Oct. 13, it still knew it had to play at a high level to get through this match.
In the opening set, the Bees never let the Hornets get too close, claiming it 25-17. Then, through each of the next two sets, the two sides exchanged points, but when it counted, B’ville stayed out in front and won the big points to claim them 25-22 and 25-23 to advance.
Ryan Gell was a powerful force, putting away 17 kills while adding three blocks and three digs. Nick Walker finished with nine kills, while Alex Brummer had three kills. Dan Shorney had 26 assists, four kills and two aces as David Cerqua contributed eight digs and three assists.
On F-M’s side, Chris Perry earned 16 assists, with Nick Bates adding 12 assists and Jehad Zatar contributing 13 digs on the back line. Up front, Sam Stauffer led with nine kills, just ahead of Jacob Rhea’s total of seven kills as Ryan Boshart added five kills. John Assenza, got seven blocks.
