SYRACUSE — With years of repairs finally done, it was time for Nottingham High School’s pool to host another big-time meet, and Jamesville-DeWitt’s girls swim team was all too happy to play a starring role.
From start to finish, the Red Rams were the dominant force in last weekend’s Section III championships, going from the Class B title to winning the overall sectional crown during Sunday’s George Falwell Cup, all the while qualifying a large group of its top swimmers for the Nov. 20-21 state championship meet at Ithaca College.
In the showdown between two teams with undefeated regular-season marks on Sunday, J-D amassed 379.5 points, easily clear of Class A sectional champion Cicero-North Syracuse’s total of 234.5 points, with New Hartford (290.5 points) in between them in second place. Christian Brothers Academy (133 points) and Fayetteville-Manlius (103 points) were further back.
To get it going in the Falwell Cup, J-D’s 200-yard medley relay team of Alden Coyne, Sophia Farchione, Meg Parker and Marissa Potamianos roared to first place in one minute, 51.29 seconds, just ahead of Oswego’s time of 1:51.69.
Remarkably, the Rams had a 1-2 dead heat in the 200 freestyle, where Alexis Phillips and Amelia Hesler each finished in exactly 1:58.03, sharing the title.
But Coyne didn’t share anything in the 50 freestyle, where in 24.15 seconds she beat out Oswego’s Mariah Metcalf (24.75 seconds) for the top spot. To complete her sprint sweep, in the 100 freestyle Coyne finished in exactly 53 seconds, lowering her season-best total from 53.38 seconds as, again, Metcalf (53.71) took the runner-up spot.
One more J-D victory came in the 200 freestyle relay, where Coyne and Phillips, joined by Katie Salvo and Samantha Coombs, improved their season-best time to 1:38.99, more than a second ahead of Oswego’s 1:40.04. Coombs, Salvo, Hesler and Phililps nearly won the 400 freestyle relay, too, as in 3:40.38 they finished 0.01 seconds behind Oswego (3:40.37) in a thrilling conclusion to the meet.
continued — Each of these swimmers are going to the state meet, but so is CBA’s Annie Fletcher, who set a season-best mark of 1:00.43 in the 100 backstroke to finish second behind New Hartford’s Alexis Falvo (59.87 seconds), with Farchione taking third place in 1:00.63. Fletcher’s teammate, Sam Lanzafame, was third in the overall diving competition, picking up 404.25 points as Liverpool’s Alyssa Vadala (449.7 points) prevailed.
Two days earlier,, the Red Rams piled up 532 points and earned the Class B championship. New Hartford finished second, with 456 points, while CBA just 300 points and settled for third place.
Coyne, as she would on Sunday, swept the sprints with state-qualifying times of 24.06 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 53.88 seconds in the 100 freestyle. Phillips also won twice, claiming the 200 freestyle in a blistering 1:57.24 and then claimed the 500 freestyle in 5:14.62, both of which helped her advance.
To start a relay sweep, in the 200 medley when Coyne, Potamianos, Parker and Farchione posted 1:50.86, well clear of a field that included CBA (1:57.99) in third place. Phillips joined Coyne, Salvo and Coombs in the 200 freestyle relay, where J-D won in 1:43.25 and CBA’s quartet of Tessa Queri, Beth Lumia, Lauren Kelly and Darien Tompkins got to second place in 1:47.28.
Though Phillps, Salvo, Coombs and Potamianos finished a close second (3:40.73) to New Hartford (3:40.34) in the 400 freestyle relay, both sides swam fast enough to earn a trip to Ithaca before Sunday’s qualifier.
Parker, on her own, won the Class B portion of the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.22, edging out New Hartford’s Gabby Bianco (1:10.88), while also getting second place in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.15, trailing another Spartan, Maya Smith, who won in 2:17.43.
Farchione was second (1:00.46) to Falvo (59.05 seconds) in the 100 backstroke as Fletcher was third in 1:00.73. Farchione also was second (1:01.86) to Falvo (58.54 seconds) in the 100 butterfly, with Potamianos (1:02.31) third.
continued — Hesler nearly upended Phillips in the 200 freestyle, getting second place in 1:57.37, just 0.13 seconds behind Philips, but would catch up a couple of days later as Hesler also took second place (5:16.42) behind Phillips in the 500 freestyle. Coombs was second in the 100 freestyle (55.03 seconds) and 50 freestyle (25.18 seconds), each time chasing Coyne. Emma Galletta was third (25.29 seconds) in the 50 freestyle.
CBA’s best moment came on the diving board, where it swept the top three positions in Class B. Sam Lanzafame won with 378.25 points, edging Erin Wind (377.25 points), as Cassie Finkbeiner finished third with 344.7 points.
Meanwhile, in the Class A sectional meet at Nottingham, F-M finished fifth in a 10-team field with 262 points as C-NS (356 points) took the team title. The Hornets’ best finish came from Sophie Fowler, who was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.72, not far from the winning time of 1:09.39 posted by C-NS’s Jamie Rolf. Riley Miller rose up to finish fifth in diving with 381.45 points,
As CBA swept the top three spots in Class B diving. J-D’s Meghan Alkins took 14th place with 329.35 points, with Hannah Gunther (320.80 points) in 15th place. Alin Liebler-Bendix (270.40 points) and Anna Skandalis were further back.
