One safe guarantee that could be made is that, for the rest of its season, the Skaneateles girls tennis team would not face anything close to the heat it had to deal with during last Tuesday’s match against Manlius-Pebble Hill at Austin Park.
But while some other local high school matches got postponed, the Lakers carried on, and sweeping all four of the doubles matches, it defeated the Trojans 6-1.
Liz Belinski and Katelyn Ellison led the charge in doubles, defeating Sophie Novak and Ana Szombatha 6-2, 6-1. By those exact same scores, Maura McNeil and Julia Torrisi got past A Weiss and L Grenis.
It proved even more lopsided in third and fourth doubles, where Rachel Feeney and Bailey Parsons rolled past H Ebner and M Curtis 6-0, 6-1, while Alex Ditch and Mary McNeil worked together for a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Anna Kilpatrick and E Leggat.
MPH’s lone point came in singles, where Grace Del Pino defeated Angela Krause 6-1, 6-2. Olivia Gage faced a battle, too, but turned back Grace Walsh 7-5, 6-3, just as Erica Byrne recorded a 6-2, 6-2 sweep over Ada Buniak.
Two days later, in much nicer, more pleasant conditions, the Lakers visited Bishop Grimes and didn’t give up any points at all, shutting out the Cobras 5-0.
In order to preserve that shutout, Krause had to win a 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 singles clash with Grimes’ Elizabeth Wolaver, while Gage had an easier time of it sweeping Rachel Christie 6-2, 6-2.
Moving to doubles, Belinski and Ellison routed Gina Martin and Mary Castricone 6-0, 6-1, with Pinkney and Maura McNeil getting past Michela Marturano and Machaela Kozlowski 6-0, 6-0. Feeney, now paired with Torrisi, blanked Lenora Cedrone and Katie Knittel by those same scores.
Now with a 5-0 record, Skaneateles goes for six in a row next Tuesday against Jordan-Elbridge before a Thursday-afternoon visit to Pulaski.
