The Town of Manlius Police are looking for any information regarding 10 recent reports of identity thefts in the area involving five suspects, four male and one female.
Last week, the department sent out a press release that said 10 identity theft reports regarding the unauthorized use of credit cards have been filed with the department between September 2014 through as recently as Nov. 9.
Officer Rebecca Kamar said the Manlius Police have consulted the Syracuse Police Department, DeWitt Police Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department for this ongoing investigation.
“It appears counterfeit credit cards are being used which implies the victim’s credit card information was obtained and the suspects used this information to manufacture replica cards. At this point, it is unknown how the credit card information was obtained,” the release stated.
Two of the suspects have been seen leaving locations in a dark colored hatchback type vehicle with gold New York State license plates. The five suspects have been captured on footage leaving several area stores.
Kamar said some ways to prevent you identity being stolen are to only use credit card information on secure websites and to never give out your information over the phone. She also said to aid recognition of identity theft, residents should consistently check their credit reports, actively monitor bank account statements and to report any discrepancies.
