When the spotlight shines on Cicero-North Syracuse next Wednesday night and the Section III boys and girls Class AA volleyball championships are at stake, Baldwinsville will be a part of both of those matches. Already, the boys Bees were in place, gaining a bye to a final. On Thursday night, B’ville found out that it would face C-NS, who earned its first trip to the title match since 2010 with a three-set sweep over the Liverpool Warriors. Ironically, when B’ville’s girls took the court at the Baker High School Gym for last Thursday night’s AA semifinal against no. 4 seed West Genesee, it was playing for a spot in the final against Liverpool – who, of course, beat C-NS in its semifinal, reversing what had happened on the boys side. This, though, was straightforward work, and the Bees handled it with its usual quality and class, taking just three sets to eliminate the Wildcats. WG had seen B’ville twice during the regular season, and were not intimidated. Accordingly, each of the first two sets took on a similar theme, with the Wildcats gaining points, but not making up ground to a Bees side that remained steady and won both sets by equal 25-19 margins. Eventually, that steadiness broke WG’s spirits, leading to a third set that was more lopsided, B’ville prevailing 25-12 to earn yet another sectional finals berth. Shayna Webber provided some power for B’ville, earning 10 kills and four blocks. Abby May had six kills, with Rachel Aiello adding five kills and Maddy Price four kills. Behind them, Meghann Smith had 16 assists and Hannah Klaben contributed seven assists, with Emily Pascale managing six digs and Riley Carlucci adding two blocks. On WG’s side, Kara Sweeney (seven assists) and Brianna Demauro (11 digs) worked on the back line as Kayla Case and Rachel Hillery had four kills apiece. B’ville should get a challenge from Liverpool, who managed to take a set from them (a rare feat in league play) on Oct. 3 in a four-set decision. Meanwhile, the boys Bees will deal with a C-NS side vastly improved from its early-season struggles and playing on its home court, too.
