By 12 days, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team missed its chance at the history books.
Many different times, the Bees had come close to stopping the Fayetteville-Manlius win streak that, ultimately, stretched out to 21 seasons and 329 consecutive matches. Then, on Sept. 3, West Genesee managed to beat the Hornets 4-3, ending the F-M run before B’ville got a chance to do the same. But since the Hornets had won all of its ensuing matches, ast Monday’s B’ville-F-M showdown still carried plenty of meaning, and it would prove close here, too – but again, F-M got the best of it, defeating the Bees by that same slim 4-3 margin. Kahlei Reisinger’s singles domination continued with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Madison Jordan. But B’ville lost the other two singles points, F-M seeing Kristina Liu defeat Jennifer Stone 6-0, 6-1 and Marissa Broddus roll past Maddie Quilter 6-3, 6-1. This left it to B’ville’s doubles teams, who would gain two of the three points it needed. Natalie Kot and Bridget Brown went through a second-set tie-breaker, defeating Shirley Zhang and Olivia Wojnovich 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), while Taylor Slink and Lauren Dusse won in straight sets over Maggie Bonomo and Shanon Fullam 6-3, 7-6. As it turned out, third doubles was the pivot point. B’ville’s Amanda Coogan and Gabrielle Fiello pushed F-M’s Katerina Atallah and Mary Trop to a third set, but lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. As that went on, Katie Cassidy and Marisa Tommarello had a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Catarina Westergaard and Abby Welker. Even with the defeat, though, B’ville felt good about its play, and with reason, because when it took on Cicero-North Syracuse Thursday afternoon, it shut out the Northstars 7-0. Reisinger had already beaten Brooke Murphy 6-0, 6-0 and Quilter had taken out Hanna Costello 6-0, 6-2, when a long second singles battle broke out. Slink, taking on Madison Murphy, was pushed to a third set and deep into that set, but still prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. That was the only three-set match, as the Bees swept doubles play. Kot and Brown defeated Kristin Inthirakot and Bethany Wicks 6-1, 6-2, while Dusse paired with Stone to beat Alyssa Forte and Ellen Iaconis 6-3, 6-2. The closest of the four doubles matches saw Coogan and Katie Cassidy handle Abby Ellis and Christine Gregory 6-2, 6-4, just as Fiello and Taylor Ferrari got past Brenna Duffy and Megan Tryniski in two sets 6-3, 6-2. B’ville also blanked Syracuse East 7-0 on Friday afternoon, with Reisinger, Stone and Quilter each winning in singles without dropping a single game in six sets. Cassidy and Coogan, in the closest doubles match, took out Emma Savastano and Yara Osman 6-3, 6-1. The Bees would have a big match on Wednesday as it took on first-place West Genesee, part of a stretch of three contests in four days that includes Central Square and Auburn.
