When the area’s top track and field athletes went to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium for Thursday’s Section III state qualifying meet, the intention was to do well and then come back to C-NS again next weekend for the state championships.

And many of those athletes would fulfill that promise, earning victories in both the Division I (large school) and Division II (small school) portions of the qualifier.

Marcellus senior Rachel Garn won the Division II portion of the 2,000-meter steeplechase in seven minutes, 23.24 seconds, well clear of Cooperstown’s Kristin Ratliff (7:34.25), her closest rival. Garn also finished second in the 800-meter run in 2:15.11 to Hamilton’s Sage Hurta (2:11.61), with Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s Annibel Coolican third in 2:21.65.

The Mustangs also saw Abbie Fallon win the Division II 100-meter dash, her time of 12.95 seconds the only one under the 13-second mark as Mount Markham’s Heather Curtin (13.08 seconds) claimed second place. Teammate M.C. Coon was sixth in 13.27 seconds.

West Genesee eighth-grader Carly Benson ruled in the Division I 800-meter run, pulling away for a victory in 2:14.50, with Fayetteville-Manlius’ Jessice Howe (2:22.57) in second place.

Also for the Wildcats, Abby Uczen advanced to the state meet in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet 3 inches with fewer misses than Jamesville-DeWitt’s Brooke DeRoberts for that top spot.

One win came from Jordan-Elbridge’s Jack Gugel, who won the boys Division II mile in 4:30.08, more than 10 seconds clear of Oneida’s Will Coulter (4:40.97) and the field.

West Genesee’s Brianna Richardson advanced by winning the Division pentathlon, earning 2,763 points to hold off Rome Free Academy’s Tricia Loso (2,694 points) for that top spot. Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s Anna Ross was third in Division II with 2,569 points, with Solvay’s Courtney Napolitano (1,994 points) further back.

In the 4×800 relay, WG’s Jack Erhard, Logan McAnulty, Nate Conroy and Kal Strickland finished third in Division I with a time of 7:55.89. Gugel, Dylan Whittico, Russell Hines and Nathan Hollis helped J-E post 8:10.52 and win the Division II portion of this event, this before Whittico was fourth (23.05 seconds) in the 200-meter dash.

Solvay’s team of Nick Cometti, Nate Carr, Owen Ryan and Eric Goodrich were fourth in the Division II 4×100 relay in 46.12 seconds. On his own, Cometti took fourth (11.44 seconds) and Marcellus’ Josh Finch fifth (11.55 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, while Goodrich was fourth (53.71 seconds) in the 400-meter dash.

The girls 4×800 saw Westhill/Ludden’s quartet of Coolican, Caroline Coates, Genny Corcoran and Emily Washburn finished second in Division II in 9:46.23 behind Homer, who won in 9:38.86. Marcellus was eighth in 10:26.23 as J-E (4:27.20) and Westhill (4:29.58) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the girls Division II 4×400 relay.

Corcoran got a time of 10:34.20 in the 3,000-meter run, second to Skaneateles’ Kaitlyn Neal (10:29.76) among Division II runners, while J-E’s Julie Hines took second (26.06 seconds) to CBA’s Anna Schug (25.68 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, with Marcellus’ Abbie Fallon sixth in 26.76 seconds. Mary Washburn was eighth in the 400-meter dash.

WG saw David Leff get third place in the Division I mile in 4:29.63, inches behind East Syracuse-Minoa’s Jesse Perrone (4:29.40) for the runner-up spot, while Lindsay Weaver was fourth in the girls 1,500-meter run in 5:02.06 and Valerie Pirro was sixth (1:09.36) in the 400 hurdles.

J-E’s Tyler Jackson earned seventh place in the Division II pentathlon with 2,320 points, with Emily Weichert eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.61 seconds. Vincenzo Carr gave Westhill/Ludden a time of 10:35.58 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to gain seventh place among Division II runners. Kyle Fitch was third in the Division II 3,200-meter run in 10:27.34.

Solvay’s Josh Marotti, clearing 11’6”, tied for second in the pole vault behind Little Falls’ Andrew Messinw, the only one to clear 12 feet. Isaiah Lee went 41’8” in the triple jump and took fifth place, while Jacob Hook provided the Bearcats with a sixth-place shot put toss of 45’8”.

Westhill/Ludden’s Bella Sterly threw the shot put 35’11 ¼”, second behind Remsen’s Megan Will (36’4 ½”). Jordan Roland cleared 5’10” in the high jump to tie for fifth place, while Noelle Coolican was fourth in the girls pole vault (8’6”) and Kayla Wild took 12th in the discus.
