Though the Skaneateles girls volleyball team knew that Solvay provided a major challenge in last Tuesday night’s match, it looked like things would work out as the visiting Lakers won each of the first two sets. This only made the Bearcats’ rally more of a shock, as the long-time Class B power found its rhythm and came from behind to beat Skaneateles in five sets, ending the Lakers’ eight-match win streak. It was close in the opening set, but the Lakers won it, 25-23, and followed up with a more comfortable 25-10 victory in the set to take a 2-0 edge. Unfazed by this, Solvay, who had beaten Marcellus just four days earlier, won the third set 25-18 and the fourth set 25-17, and then went out in the final set and withstood all of the Lakers’ charges to clinch the match by a 25-20 margin. Grace Delasin picked up 14 assists and added 15 digs. Anna Smith also worked on the back line, earning eight assists, 15 digs, two aces and two kills, while Mia Campanile added seven assists and five digs. Kelsey Kraetz had a team-best 10 kills. Malorie Olin and Natalie Roche each had eight kills, with Roche contributing 16 digs and Kelsey Farrell earning five kills. Casey VanSlyke had 17 digs and Christina Didio added 13 digs. Solvay, to win, needed some fine all-around efforts – and got them. Jackie Gardner turned in 24 assists, 13 digs, nine kills and five aces, while Lauren Bandera amassed 17 assists, eight kills, seven aces and 12 digs. Heather Thompson (14 kills) and Jackie Allen (11 kills, 14 digs) helped out. Skaneateles, who fell to 8-2 on the season, had a week to stew about this defeat before resuming action Tuesday against Hannibal, two days before a visit to Bishop Grimes.
