Trevor Nourse faced major pressure as his Cazenovia boys golf team played Marcellus and Solvay in Friday’s three-way match at Pine Grove Golf Club. Either Nourse broke 40, or he would not qualify for the Section III tournament.

With one memorable swing, Nourse reached his goal.

Playing the 110-yard 5th hole at Pine Grove, Nourse selected a wedge, and hit it right at the pin. What neither he, nor his playing partners, knew, until they reached the green, was that Nourse had recorded a hole-in-one.

That ace helped push Nourse’s total to a 38, enough to reach the sectionals, and was part of a superb team effort where Trevor Gatzke shot 37, Matt Schaffner matched Nourse’s 38 (without an ace), Cody Thorp posted a 39 and Nick Becker added a 40.

Two days after a solid fourth-place showing in the Warrior Classic at Hidden Valley on May 11, the Lakers faced some of those same opponents in last Monday’s West Side Classic at Bellevue Country Club.

With a team total of 174, Cazenovia rose to second place, topped only by Westhill, who won with 166. Gatzke shot a 42 for nine holes, one ahead of Thorp’s 43, while Gus Gosson paced Westhill, and all of the other individuals in the field, with a 37.

Then the Lakers went head-to-head with Westhill at Cazenovia Country Club, and while it had a solid team showing, it still lost 194-208 to the Warriors.

Schaffner had a 39, with Gatzke contributing a 40. Thorp (41), Brian Demo (43) and Becker (45) were close behind as the Warriors’ Gosson broke par with a 35, while Nate Meisner had a 37. Andy Vadnais and Mike Wild each shot 39.

Not that far from home, girls golf players from Chittenango and Cazenovia competed in last Tuesday’s Onondaga High School League tournament at Woodcrest Golf Club in Manlius.

The Bears had a strong showing, taking fourth place in the eight-team field with 445, though it was far from Jamesville-DeWitt’s winning total of 373.

Meg Arnold, with an 18-hole score of 96, tied for sixth place among individuals as J-D’s Jung-Hye Kim took top individual honors with an 85, two shots ahead of teammates Victoria Roney and Molly Hair. Carolyn Ledger had a 110, one shot better than Megan Gearity, with Greta Swift at 128, four shots better than Kari Cumber.

Cazenovia only had two individuals enter the league tournament. Danielle Mevec, who shot a 105, finished in ninth place, while Sophie Goris finished with a 126.

Before this, Chittenango improved to 4-4 last Monday, defeating East Syracuse-Minoa 227-235. Arnold continued to play well, posting a 48 at Woodcrest, with help from Gearity, who shot a 50, and Greta Swift, who earned a 61.

Cazenovia went to Tuscarora last Monday and pull away from Marcellus, defeating the Mustangs 209-223. Danielle Mevec, with a 48, led the Lakers as Maggie Carpenter lagged close behind with a 49. Avery Mordaunt led Marcellus with a 52.
