One of the reasons for the annual success of the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team is its willingness to travel out of Central New York in order to find interesting competition and help the players bond on and off the field. In years past, that meant trips to locales like California and Colorado, but in 2013 the Bees were more modest in its travel plans, simply venturing downstate during the April school break to open its season with a pair of tough games. B’ville would meet with Long Island powerhouse Farmingdale in the first of these contests Tuesday afternoon, and struggle throughout the afternoon in a 16-5 defeat to the Dalers. Farmingdale won most of the draws and made things uncomfortable for B’ville’s defense, steadily building a 10-2 lead and continuing to push in the latter stages, even with the game well in hand. Offensively, the Bees saw Amari Pollard produce two goals and one assist. Taylor Gebhardt also scored twice, with Abbey Foote getting the other goal. Nicole Burrows and Paige Postalwait split time in goal, making 16 saves between them. Things turned around in a big way during Thursday’s game against Suffern (Section I), where the Bees, trailing at halftime, saw its attack start to find some rhythm as it came from behind to defeat the Mounties 7-6. Suffern had a 3-2 edge at the break, but in the second half B’ville fought its way back, maintaining consistent defense while converting more at the other end. Pollard and Gebhardt both finished with two goals. Kennedy Frink stepped up with one goal and one assist, while Foote and Johna Kjerstad both scored, too. Sarah Klaben added an assist as each of Burrows’ seven saves proved important. B’ville has another road game next Tuesday, at Rome Free Academy, and finally gets to play in front of the home folks next Thursday night against Section V power Fairport.
