Soon enough, the girls soccer teams from Christian Brothers Academy and East Syracuse-Minoa will get their shots at Jamesville-DeWitt in what promises to be an exciting OHSL Freedom division contest throughout the fall. The Brothers, coming off last year’s 12-5-2 run to the Section III Class AA final, graduated just three seniors and brings back a lot of talent, from three-sport star Marisa Romeo to Eva Gordon, one of the area’s top strikers. Both were on display in last Tuesday night’s opener, when CBA beat Homer 4-1. Steadily, the Brothers applied pressure until it had a 2-0 halftime lead, and it added to the margin in the late stages. Even while facing all sorts of double and triple teams, Gordon managed one goal and one assist, while Romeo, with the space offered her, scored twice. Maddie Calkins matched Gordon, also earning a goal and an assist, while Gabby Carni also got an assist. But the Brothers would trip up Friday, at Fulton, unable to get any sort of rhythm going in a 2-0 defeat to the Red Raiders. Fulton got both of its goals in the first half, Jocelyn Ravisi and Mary Morrison pushing shots into the net. From there, CBA’s attack picked up, but it was unable to get a shot past Red Raiders goalie Allyson Bricker, who recorded seven saves. Meanwhile, ESM has ambition, too, after J-D stopped them in the 2011 sectional semifinals. The Spartans got things started last Tuesday with an efficient 3-0 home shutout of Mexico. Taking 19 shots, the Spartans had some frustration against Mexico goalie Tyler Julian, but broke through enough times. Kaitlyn Shaughnessy, Sarah Britton and Natalie O’Brien took turns putting in goals, while Olivia Chopskie and Danielle Douglas earned assists. But the Spartans lost a 1-0 decision to Cortland on Thursday night, unable to answer Kelsey Quail’s first-half goal, fed by Ashley Prentice. ESM only had a handful of close chances throughout the night as Purple Tigers goalie Amanda Edwards stopped all five shots she faced. J-D, coming off a season-opening defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius on Sept. 1, did not return to action until Thursday, but when it did, the Red Rams’ vaunted attack was back in top form in a 7-0 shutout of the combined Syracuse city squad. It was 5-0 by halftime, and J-D spread things around. Seven different players – Maddy Devereaux, Jessica Holmes, Allie Balotin, Erin Brinley, Ella Digiovanni, Amber Hyatt and Emily Hauser – earned the seven goals, with Balotin picking up a pair of assists. Holmes, Devereaux and Digiovanni had one assist apiece.
