Beginning on Saturday afternoon, the Jordan-Elbridge girls lacrosse team made its venture into the Section III Class C playoffs following a crowded final week of the regular season. Drawing the no. 10 seed, the Eagles met no. 7 seed Cortland at Homer High School’s turf, where the unfamiliar setting and opponent meant nothing as J-E dominated through most of the game, eliminating the Purple Tigers 13-4. With the win, J-E (10-7) advances to meet no. 2 seed Marcellus (whom it lost to 15-9 back on April 28) in Tuesday night’s quarterfinal. The winner goes to Thursday’s semifinals at West Genesee against Skaneateles or Tully, with the final May 31 at Liverpool. Even a week full of contests did not wear out the Eagles too much, as it won most of the draws in the first half against Cortland, attacked and converted with regularity. By the break, J-E held a 7-2 lead. As the second half wore on, the margin kept growing, and the Purple Tigers could not answer, watching J-E goalie Kelsey Richardson stop 10 of the 14 shots she faced. On the offensive end, the production was spread around. Gabby Thorpe stepped up to score three goals, the same total as Amanda Wheeler, while Ella Thorpe fed everybody with four assists to go with her two goals. Kelsey Youmell and Carrie-Jo Farrugia both had two goals and one assist, with Jessica Papapietro adding one goal and one assist. Chelsea Maitland and Kathryn Stevenson earned assists, too. Before all this, J-E had played three times in four days, starting last Tuesday night by putting together a 14-7 victory over Waterloo, from the Section V ranks. What was a close game turned when the Eagles outscored Waterloo 9-3 in the second half. Farrugia nearly matched the opposition by herself, earning six goals as Thorpe got three goals and one assist and Wheeler added two goals and two assists. Chelsea Maitland, Emily Bates and Jenna Fried each had one goal. And on Thursday night, the Eagles ripped Bishop Ludden 17-2. Holding the ball for much of the contest, the Eagles peppered the Gaelic Knights, especially in a 10-1 second-half surge. Farrugia had five goals, giving her 11 for the week. Amanda Brown scored three times, while Youmell had two goals and two assists and Wheeler also scored twice. Thorpe, Maitland, Emily Bates and Papapietro also scored as Richardson made 13 saves. To top it off, the Eagles lost 16-14 to LaFayette, unable to rally from a 10-7 halftime deficit. This came even though Youmell notched five goals and one assist and Wheeler added four goals and three assists. Farrugia had her own three-goal effort as Snyder added two assists and Thorpe earned one goal and one assist.
