The same round, the same venue, the same opponents and the same result – namely, Jamesville-DeWitt’s girls basketball team taking East Syracuse-Minoa out of the Section III Class A playoffs. In Friday night’s Class A quarterfinal, the no. 4 seed Red Rams mostly relied on its defense as it took full advantage of a significant absence in the no. 5 seed Spartans’ lineup to record a 47-31 victory. Shortly after, the J-D boys team, in pursuit of a fourth straight sectional and state Class A championship, opened as the no. 2 seed in the Class A quarterfinals and battered no. 10 seed Mexico in an 85-52 decision. The plan for ESM’s girls on this night was to earn all kinds of revenge – first for the painful double-overtime defeat it took to J-D in this same Class A quaterfinal round a year ago, then for a pair of regular-season losses to the Rams by scores of 43-40 and 60-41. All those plans took a major hit, though, when point guard Julie Maselli, the Spartans’ third-leading scorer, went to the sidelines with mononucleosis, and was unable to play. Without its floor general, ESM would struggle on the offensive side throughout the evening. It didn’t hurt right away, though, as Olivia Luciaini notched 10 first-half points. ESM actually led 12-9 after one period and were tied, 15-15, late in the first half before J-D made what proved to be a devastating run. Baskets by Caitlin Cariseo, Lauren Beville and Ariell Mussi, plus free throws from Cydney Goodrum, constituted a 9-1 run that pushed the Rams in front, 24-16, going into halftime, and it would never get caught again. Gradually, J-D pulled away in the second half, causing all kinds of trouble for ESM’s offense while, at the same time, nicely distributing its baskets around as eight different players got at least one field goal. Cavanaugh led with 11 points, while Mussi and Katie Maroney each got eight points. Beville added seven points and Goodrum six points as Luciani led both sides with 15 points. Just after the girls Rams were finished, it was the J-D boys turn. Having dominated every opponent in the four games since Demetrius Mitchell returned from a broken foot, the same thing was expected against Mexico, who had topped no. 7 seed Carthage 60-59 in the first round behind Andrew Disanto’s career-best 25 points and 12 rebounds. Again, the Rams set a furious pace, and the Tigers tried to keep up, only trailing 23-16 after one period. It was 42-30 by halftime, but J-D still wasn’t pleased – at least until the third quarter, when it devastated Mexico with a 31-point outburst in those eight minutes. Mexico dearly paid for focusing its attention on DaJuan Coleman as Tyler Cavanaugh burned the Tigers all night long, hitting on 11 field goals, two of them 3-pointers, on his way to a season-best 29 points. Coleman still had a solid night, finishing with 21 points as Mitchell got most of his 18 points from sinking four 3-pointers. What’s more, J-D’s defense completely silenced Disanto, as he only got four points, something Jake Deno (20 points) and Dana Rowe (10 points) could not make up for. Now both J-D teams will meet Whitesboro in the Class A semifinal round – with the boys a heavy favorite and the girls just as pronounced an underdog against the top-seeded, undefeated (19-0 Warriors). Both games are at Chittenango Wednesday night, starting at 6 p.m. If the girls Rams pull it off, it gets Cortland or New Hartford in Sunday’s finals at Utica Auditorium at 3:45 J-D’s boys could get a chance to avenge that regular-season defeat to Cortland if it can beat Whitesboro and the no. 1 seed Purple Tigers knock off Oneida in its semifinal. The title game at Utica Auditorium is Saturday at 2:45.
