Wet weather in the transition from March to April put a halt to the Chittenango baseball team’s activity as the 2011 season got underway. Before that, though, the Bears did get in its season opener against Cortland Wednesday afternoon at DiChristina Field, using a sixth-inning rally to gain a 3-2 victory over the Purple Tigers. With a large returning cast from 2010, Chittenango has high expectations and, right from the start, got superb pitching from Wes Burghardt and Jeff Pierce. Other than a first-inning run, Burghardt kept Cortland off the board in 4 2/3 innings of work. Pierce replaced him with the game tied, 1-1, and though he allowed a quick run, he blanked the Purple Tigers the rest of the way with four strikeouts to earn the win. Combined, Burghardt and Pierce gave up just three hits. Chittenango still trailed, 2-1, when in the bottom of the sixth it got to Cortland pitcher Alex Stacy for two runs to move ahead. Zach Drake drove in Mike Moon with the go-ahead run and finished with a pair of RBIs as Burghardt managed two hits and drove in the other run. Aaron Enders had his team’s only double. Should the weather improve next week, the Bears will have a trio of games this week against Mexico, Jamesville-DeWitt and Henninger.
