As the OHSL Liberty division track and field regular season wrapped up last Tuesday afternoon, Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge faced each other in a three-way meet also involving Skaneateles. On the boys side, the Mustangs won 86-55, but the girls Eagles prevailed by a narrow 71-70 margin. Both sides would beat Skaneateles in the boys meet, but lose to the Lakers in the girls meet. Mike Quercia starred on several fronts for the boys Mustangs. Not only did he win the mile in 4:49.7 and take the 400-meter dash in 53 seconds flat, he went to the triple jump and won by going 40 feet 4 inches. Also, Quercia joined Tom Riccardi, Jesse Garn and Ryan Manahan in posting a time of 8:39.4 in the 4×800 relay. Marcellus also got first in the 4×100 relay as Nick Huss, Brad Kermes, Nate Waite and Kevin Daily prevailed in 48.1 seconds. Huss, with a top pole vault of 12 feet 9 inches, led a big Mustang effort in field events. Aside from Quercia, Zach Wiley won the shot put (41 feet 10 1/2 inches) and Josh Tucker unleashed a top discus throw of 116 feet 3 inches. Keith Shields added a title in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.7 seconds. J-E featured Andrew Forward, who won the long jump with 17 feet 10 1/4 inches and was a close second (39 feet 4 3/4 inches) to Quercia in the triple jump. On the oval, Andrew Conlan took the 200-meter dash (23.8 seconds), while Cody Stanton tore through the 3,200-meter run in 9:54.9. In the 4×400 relay, Conlan, Greg Bader, Carlan Coomey and Allan Kimak helped the Eagles prevail in 3:45.9. The narrow J-E margin over Marcellus in the girls meet came from high finishes in every event, even though it won just twice. Lisa Kimak took the 100-meter hurdles (18.5 seconds) and Rachel Scott covered the 400 hurdles in 1:11.5. Marcellus countered with Laura Quercia winning both the 400 (1:03 flat) and 800 (2:03.1), while Elizabeth Dean took the 1,500-meter run (5:25.5) and Rachel Garn ran 3,000 meters in 12:06.8. Also, Quercia, Dean, Rachel Garn and Maggie Dunn claimed the 4×800 in 10:03.4 as Skaneateles used a sweep of field events as the foundation for its wins over the Mustangs and Eagles.
