Even with its firm grip on the Division I regular-season crown, the West Genesee ice hockey team did not want to let anyone else enter the conversation. WG faced Cicero-North Syracuse on Tuesday at Shove Park, continuing the Northstars’ slump with a 5-0 shutout. By the time it was done, the Wildcats had taken 44 shots, applying heavy pressure to CNS goalie Zach Hall and beginning to find success in the later periods. Zach Lewis posted his first hat trick of the season, scoring three times as feeds came from Erich Haney, Brady Fremont and D.J. Mazzoni, each of whom had two assists. Casey Schattner and Adam King put up one goal and one assist apiece. At the same time, Solvay, in second place in Division II West going into its game against Watertown IHC at State Fair Coliseum, used one big spurt to push past the Cavaliers 5-2. They were still 0-0 going into the second period, when Solvay punished IHC by scoring four times to the Cavaliers’ one, all with a nice display of balance. Five different players — Tim Burgess, Josh Ginestro, Tom Missert, Nick Downs and Carmen Birenza – had the five Solvay goals. Both Mike Sniffen and Dustin Webb joined Burgess, Missert and Ginestro in the assist column.
