When the Skaneateles girls volleyball team moved from a winter to fall campaign for 2010, Cazenovia, the team it beat last February for the Section III Class B title, came with them. So the two Lakers rivals just had to meet — which they did Friday night, in Skaneateles, and once again the champs came out on top, rallying to beat Cazenovia in four games. At first, it appeared that Cazenovia, with many of its top players back from last winter, had caught up to Skaneateles as it pulled out the opening game by a score of 25-21. But it turned around in the second game, when Skaneateles served the ball well and played near-perfect defense to win by a decisive 25-13 margin. Though the third game proved much closer, Skaneateles again prevailed, 25-21, and in the fourth game the hosts closed out the match by prevailing 25-19. Colleen Cargile led the back line, producing 16 assists and 17 digs. Next to her, Erin Callahan had 23 digs, while Gabby Eckles mixed in seven digs, three aces, four kills, four blocks and three assists. Anna Goodell had a team-high nine kills, with Caroline Walton getting six kills and six blocks as both of them contributed 11 digs. In defeat, Cazenovia saw Lizzy Reed (15 kills) and Hannah Koennecke (11 kills) work on the back line as Chelsea Lauria (16 assists) and Amber Robinson (15 assists) fed them. A few days before the showdown with Cazenovia, the Lakers went to Fowler and swept past the Falcons 25-7, 25-12, 25-6. Cargile finished with 15 assists, adding four aces. Goodell gained seven aces, with Gabby Eckles earning five kills and Julianna Augustine contributing four kills. Right after the Cazenovia win, Skaneateles began a series of four matches in five days, all against Class AA foes — Nottingham, Cicero-North Syracuse, West Genesee and Henninger.
