One last time, top local indoor track and field athletes traveled to Manley Field House before its transformation into a Syracuse University practice facility. The occasion was last Friday night’s state qualifying meet, where both boys and girls athletes battled for spots in this Saturday’s state championships at Cornell University. West Genesee’s Katie Bott emerged with the victory in the girls 600-meter run. In a time of 1:40.84, Bott held off New Hartford’s Amy Sleeper (1:41.65) and the rest of a competitive field. Natalie Alibrandi (Fayetteville-Manlius) was third in 1:42.79. Meanwhile, in the boys 3,200-meter run, Bishop Ludden’s Sean Curry could not be stopped. He pulled away from the field and dominated the race, winning in a time of 9:24.38, more than 16 seconds clear of CNS’s Chris Buchanan at the wire. Elsewhere in boys action, West Genesee’s 4×400 relay team of Ron Ta, Steve Houghmaster, Jon Richardson and Jake Lafaver finished second in 3:31.18 as CNS (3:29.65) prevailed. Jake Lafaver, Zack Lafaver, Ethan Wojcik and Zak Karpinski posted 1:37.36 for fifth in the 4×200. Chris Moore nearly gave Westhill a victory in the mile, going to the line with F-M’s Brendan Farrell. Moore finished in 4:30.03, inches behind Farrell, who won in 4:29.98. Solvay’s Jerry Santoferrara was third in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, while the Bearcats’ quartet of Tyler Grim, Conor Halton, Jeremy Parker and Rich Salvagno took third in the 4×200 relay in 1:36.53. Ludden’s Zach Johnson took fourth (1:28.36) in the 600-meter run. In the girls state qualifier, Ludden’s Jessica Curry earned third place in the 3,000-meter run in a clocking of 10:57. WG’s 4×800 relay team of Bott, Alex Incaudo, Colleen Smith and Kristin Waters finished fifth in 10:14.60.
