To be sure, the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team took major hits from the graduation of several key players prior to the 2009 season. But the Brothers still aim to be a contender, as it vividly displayed in Wednesday night’s opener at Chittenango, where Katie Webster proved unstoppable in a 15-7 victory over the Bears. Webster had to take a larger role. Brittany Brigandi and M.E. Lapham have departed, as have CBA stars like Kristen Robinson, Amanda Koval, Mary Catanzarita and Gwen Withers, all of whom started in 2008. Embracing her new responsibility, Webster torched Chittenango’s defense all night long. By game’s end, she had eight goals, more than the entire Bears roster, plus an assist. Help came from freshman Taylor Gait and newcomer Meghan Hannan, both of whom scored twice. Michelle Wiese, Taylor Poplawski and Sophie Raciatti each had one goal. Combined, they helped CBA snatch a 9-4 edge by halftime. Senior goalie Emma Taylor’s 10 saves helped to assure that the Bears could not sustain a comeback.
