On courts covered by snow just a couple of days earlier, the Liverpool boys tennis team quickly found a winning form. By far, the biggest prize was attained on Saturday, when the Warriors held off West Genesee in a five-way OHSL Colonial National division tournament. Liverpool had 128 points, to the Wildcats’ 113. Six of the seven finals went the Warriors’ way. Nick Schneider beat Kunal Shetty 6-1, 6-3, while Dan Salem needed three sets to beat Jeff Kurtz 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Kevin Zylka fell in three sets to Jon Papazides 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Ken Schiefer and Mike Lazara began the doubles sweep, beating Eric Tressler and Matt Zell 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Also in straight sets, Mike Buckenmeyer and Michael Vaughn bat Josh Barrett and Craig Shepard 6-4, 6-2. Rallying from behind, David Anthony and Ryan DeAngelis got past Tim Gallivan and Andrew Tunguz 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Also, Scott Rosenheck and Dave Sanderson earned a 6-7 (7-2), 7-5, 6-4 win over Aaron Speech and Aaron Keohane. The Warriors met Utica Proctor last Wednesday in the 2007 season opener and used solid all-around play to beat the Raiders 5-2. Schneider topped Adam Sroczyk 6-2, 6-3, and Zylka followed a similar path on his way to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Rocco Carzo. Liverpool also won three of the four doubles matches, including a forfeit. Rosenheck and Sanderson flew past Rob Cutright and Devon Hoffman 6-1, 6-0, while Salem and DeAngelis rolled past Dana Gionnonadrea and David Butler 6-3, 6-1. Vaughn, playing singles, took a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Mike Zaloom, while the doubles team of Lazara and Anthony dropped a third-set tie-breaker to Duane Wynn and Dan Reina 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6). A day later, Liverpool met Cortland in a non-league contest and rolled to a 5-0 victory over the Purple Tigers. In three sets, Zylka preserved the sweep, beating Ben Girtain-Plowe 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Schneider beat Doug Robbins 6-2, 6-1, while Salem shut out Greg Wissink 6-0, 6-0. The doubles teams of Schiefer-DeAngelis and Sanderson-Lazara also prevailed in straight sets. And the Warriors made it three in a row Friday, blanking Oswego 7-0. Schneider, Zylka and Salem all prevailed in singles without dropping more than three games in any set. For the doubles teams, it was a bit tougher. Lazara and Anthony needed three sets and the survival of a second-set tie-breaker to beat Steve Howard and Derek Roth 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Buckenmeyer and Mike Brughen went to the wire, and knocked off Kris Baum and Max Kick 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. After the tournament victory, Liverpool resumed league contests on Monday and swept past Henninger, 7-0, to move to 4-0 on the season. Every match was won in straight sets. Salem worked a bit harder, but still beat Erik Rehn in first singles 6-1, 7-5, while DeAngelis shut out Taurean Boyd 6-0, 6-0, and Rosenheck took a turn in singles to beat Eric Coye 6-0, 6-1. Matt Rusch and Jon Schumacher got a chance to play in doubles, and rolled past Abdul Hadi and Xuan Tran 6-3, 6-2. Andrew Fisher and Justin Bond, in a similar position, beat Bryce Turner and Anthony Scro 6-0, 6-0.
