The Baldwinsville boys basketball team visited Corcoran Thursday night and had a real shot at an upset going into the fourth quarter before the Cougars took over late and handed B’ville a 76-57 defeat.
Through an evenly played first half, B’ville had many different leads, and at the break the two sides were tied, 33-33.
Corcoran went in front in the third quarter, but did not get away until a fourth quarter where it used speed and depth to wear the Bees down, closing on a 25-11 spurt.
Kevin Roy had a fine effort for B’ville, earning 19 points, with Chris Whelan close behind as he got 16 points. Brian Wilson picked up six points.
Dewan Bohannon, with 21 points, led the Cougars as teammates Riley Stroman (11 points) and Algeron Torrance (10 points) also hit double figures.
Back at the Baker High School gym, the girls Bees, who had climbed above .500 by beating Auburn earlier in the week, got a bit of reality as Corcoran, the defending Class AA champions, beat B’ville 62-33.
From the time the Cougars ran out to a 24-7 first-quarter edge, B’ville was in a catch-up situation. Yet none of the Bees’ players could get much space against Corcoran’s fierce defensive pressure.
Maggie Monnat, with eight points, and Deanna Didio, with six points, led B’ville’s effort. Corcoran’s star forward, Irene Hudson, picked up 18 points, while Coriesha Hickey added 13 points.
