It didn’t take too long for the Morrisville-Eaton and Canastota wrestling teams to see just what kind of challenges the Center State Conference offered up. The Warriors dropped its league opener to Sherburne-Earlville 35-22 Tuesday night, just as the Raiders ran into Mohawk and couldn’t find many points in a 49-12 loss to the Mohicans. M-E is still trying to get used to life without one of the famed LeBlanc brothers on hand. Between them, Treavor, Paul and Ryan won eight sectional titles, with Paul earning a state title at 140 pounds in 2005 and Ryan claiming two consecutive state championships at 160 pounds in 2008 and ’09. Now they are gone, as is Alex Meyers (fifth in the state at 215 pounds in ’09), and head coach Duane LeBlanc is still trying to see what he has, which includes some strength in the higher weight classes — as it showed against Sherburne-Earlville. Jake Holcomb, at 189 pounds, and Dalton Villnave, at 215 pounds, both won with pins to open the meet, and Tyler Streeter (103 pounds) followed with a 16-5 win over Dustin Mosely. However, the Marauders won eight of the remaining nine matches, two of them by forfeits. Only Mike Vreeland, at 145 pounds, broke the streak by pinning Derrick Ferris. Canastota had even more difficulty against Mohawk, who won the first four matches to streak to a 15-0 lead. That included close decisions where the Raiders’ Brandon Durfee (135 pounds) lost to Kyle LaBarge 6-5 and Schuyler Jayson (145 pounds) fell to Dustin Bond 5-4. Jeremy Brodfuehrer finally got the Raiders on the board at 160 pounds, beating Eric Ulinski 4-2. When Fred Sherman (171 pounds) pinned Travis Herringshaw late in the second period and Zach Zupan (189 pounds) beat Mike Judson 11-7, the Raiders looked to be back in it. But Mohawk turned it around when Mike Barse beat Sam Stagnitti 4-1 in the 215-pound division, and the Mohicans did not lose again, with a forfeit, three pins and one decision.
