By the time the warm weather showed up at week’s end, the Chittenango baseball team was quite ready for regular activity. And the Bears were already having a good week before Saturday’s home date with Mexico — but it felt even better after beating the potent Tigers 7-2. With the score 0-0, Chittenango got to Mexico pitcher Sam Passer for four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Even when the Tigers scored twice in the top of the third on Kody O’Connor’s home run, the Bears answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of that frame and would not get caught. Jeff Pierce, allowing nothing but O’Connor’s round-tripper, got the win, with Shaun Skurpski working in relief. Chittenanago had 13 hits, to Mexico’s seven, as Zach Boswell and Andrew Lampman each had two RBIs. Skurpki, Jon Stevens and Cody Skinner each drove in one run. Rained out last Monday at CBA, the Bears resumed action a day later and found trouble at East Syracuse-Minoa, falling to the Spartans 12-4. At least in the early going, Chittenango did fine, racing to a 4-0 lead by the second inning. Pat McGinnis bashed a two-run home run and, with solid pitching, kept ESM’s bats rather quiet. As they entered the bottom of the fifth, the Bears still led 4-1, but it didn’t hold up. The Spartans chased McGinnis with six runs in that frame and continued the attack against relievers Kevin Streeter and Mike Moon, getting five more runs in the bottom of the sixth. ESM saw Chris Banaszek earn four RBIs, with Jake Curtis and Neil Delaney each gaining two doubles and Curtis driving in three runs. When the Bears surfaced again to face Vernon Verona Sherrill on Friday afternoon, it turned things around in a big way, toppling the Red Devils 8-2. Combined, three pitchers –Stevens, Skurpski and Kevin Streeter — gave up just four hits, helped in no small part by the fact that Chittenango got runs in each of the first four innings to take charge. On the offensive side, Jake Bicknell doubled twice and earned an RBI. McGinnis and Lampman each drove in two runs, with Skinner and Devin Christopher getting one RBI apiece. For VVS, Jamie Cielinski took the loss, with Jeremy Roden and Tyler Mautner driving in the Red Devils’ lone runs. And the Red Devils didn’t fret for too long, wiping out Carthage Saturday in a doubleheader where it won by scores of 26-6 and 17-3.
