Disregarding what the final regular-season standings showed, both Skaneateles track and field teams worked their way to the top and pulled off a sweep at last Tuesday’s OHSL Liberty Division championship meet at Marcellus High School. In the girls meet, the Lakers pulled far away from regular-season champion Christian Brothers Academy, earning 163 points to the Brothers’ 113. And while the boys meet proved extraordinarily close, Skaneateles pulled it out with 109.5 points, just ahead of Westhill (105 points) and Marcellus (104 points), and well clear of Solvay (86.5 points), who, like Westhill, beat the Lakers six days earlier. Rachel Hosie dominated distance running, as she won the 1,500-meter run in 4:51.47, then took the 3,000-meter run in 10:53.72. Christie Barnett added her own title by winning the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.71, beating the field by more than two seconds, while Alexis Mazzeo earned second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:23.34. Skaneateles also won two of the three relays. Barnett, Amanda Gray, Eileen Ford and Carly Strods claimed the 4×400 in 4:13.61, while Strods, Beatrice Walton, Grace VanderVen and Kelsey Eshleman claimed the 4×800 in 10:00.06. Gabby Eckles won the high jump, clearing 5 feet 1 inches, as Madison Eckles soared past 9 feet 6 inches to take first place in the pole vault. Caroline Walton won the discus, tossing it 92 feet 8 inches, and got second (31 feet 7 1/4 inches) in the shot put. Even when CBA’s Melissa Zajdel swept through the sprints, Skaneateles made up for it by high finishes that added up to 40 points. Victoria Sakal earned second in both the 100-meter dash (13.23 seconds) and 200-meter dash (27.40 seconds), with Cassie Berg just behind Sakal as she got third in the 200 in 27.59 seconds. Ford (1:01.21) and Barnett (1:01.80) were second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter dash as Sakal, Carley Baulick, Kaela Fiutak and Cassie Berg got second (52.86 seconds) in the 4×100 relay. Ford went on to take third in the triple jump (31 feet 6 1/4 inches), while VanderVen had a third-place long jump of 15 feet 1 inch. As this was going on, Skaneateles pulled out a victory in the boys OHSL meet with high finishes on many fronts. Pat Rooney, in 58.08 seconds, held off Westhill’s Dymytry Mazuryk (58.61 seconds) in the 400-meter hurdles, and he went 41 feet 8 1/2 inches to prevail in the triple jump. Rooney teamed with Steven Tucker, Calvin Davis and Brae Kriever to win the 4×400 relay in 3:31.31. Kriever, on his own, earned a victory in the long jump, going 20 feet 4 inches, after a second (11.58 seconds) in the 400-meter dash. Sean Cooper got third (1:01.16) behind Rooney in the 400 hurdles and also took second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.49 seconds. Tim Lewis cleared 5 feet 8 inches to finish second in the high jump as John Turose tied for fourth (10 feet 6 inches) in the pole vault. Davis was fourth (2:03.33) in the 800-meter run. Drake Hill was second in the shot put, tossing it 46 feet 6 3/4 inches, and took fourth (117 feet 7 inches) in the discus. In the 4×800 relay, Rooney, Davis, Eric Stucker and Mark Cannuciari finished second, in 8:27.52, while Kriever, Lewis, John Turose and Xander Edwards ran to second in the 4×100 in 46.86 seconds.
