Eric Ormond was less than 90 seconds from landing a victory in his head coaching debut with the Jamesville-DeWitt football team – but Fowler pre-empted the possible celebration. One big play by the Falcons was enough to sink the Red Rams 6-3 in Sunday’s Kickoff Classic at the Carrier Dome. J-D had a 3-0 lead as time began to wind down, thanks to Denis Petrovic’s 22-yard field goal that skimmed the left upright in the third quarter after a Michael Paul fumble recovery. With 1:28 left, Fowler had the ball at its own 33-yard line and were out of time-outs, so it had to come up with lots of yards, quickly, or face defeat. What happened next proved stunning. Falcons quarterback Kelvin Amparo dropped back, then threw over the middle. Wide receiver London Odister was open at the 50, with no J-D defender around him. Odister caught the pass, and by the time the Red Rams started chasing after him, Odister was gone to the end zone for what proved to be the game’s only touchdown. In a game where the defenses ruled, J-D looked to be in good shape, having forced Fowler to commit five turnovers, including three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. The work of Paul, Cody Marsh and Mac Feiner on the front line, combined with linebackers Kenny Schunck, Jake LaRussa and David Urcioli, frustrated Fowler most of the afternoon. Still, the game remained 0-0 into the third quarter, the Red Rams getting solid running from Jalaan Kinsey and Demetrius Mitchell, but unable to turn them into points. After Petrovic’s field goal, J-D watched Fowler drive to the Rams’ 10-yard line early in the fourth quarter, only to have a fumbled snap get pounced on by Schunck. J-D then moved the ball to midfield, running it well. But when quarterback David Sacco tried a deep pass down the right sideline, Fowler’s Josh Cruz picked it off, keeping his team close. Even after the go-ahead TD, J-D still had a chance. But facing third-down-and-one on its own 40 with more than a minute to play, Sacco tried two passes – and didn’t complete them. Following a short week of work, the Rams play the first of four consecutive home games Friday against Whitesboro at 6:30. The Warriors rallied past Indian River 20-19 in its opener.
