As it continued to protect its unbeaten mark, the Canastota girls basketball team got to witness, first-hand, how much things can change in a single season. Cooperstown, the reigning Section III Class C champions that reached the state final four a season ago, proved this time to be just another speed bump in the Raiders’ path toward perfection as Canastota beat the Redskins 43-25 Tuesday night for its 10th straight victory. In 2007-08, Cooperstown won 25 games in a row on its way to Troy, but then saw all five starters graduate, including 6-foot seniors Sam Fox and Jen Wehner. Forced to retool, the Redskins have struggled this winter, and Canastota did not make things better. All the Raiders did in the first quarter was hold Cooperstown to just four points. By halftime, the margin was 26-13, but Canastota locked things up by putting together a 15-4 domination of the third quarter. Even more encouraging was the fact that the Raiders didn’t need Liz McGinley to carry the offense, though she did finish with 14 points. Alexis Havens broke into double figures with 10 points, while Alicia Hibbard and Lindsay McGinley finished with six points apiece. Among Cooperstown players, only Ashley Rowley (nine points) had more than two field goals. Still at home Thursday night, the 10-0 Raiders meet Sherburne-Earlville to start the second half of the regular-season slate.
