May is nearing an end – and as usual, both of West Genesee’s lacrosse teams have Section III and state championships to pursue. On Friday, both sets of Wildcats won. In the girls Section III Class A semifinals at Christian Brothers Academy’s Alibrandi Stadium, WG blasted past Liverpool 19-2, advancing to Tuesday’s championship game against Fayetteville-Manlius at SUNY-Cortland. Going after its fourth sectional title and third state crown in four years, the girls Wildcats (17-1) had rested for more than a week before confronting Liverpool, who beat Cicero-North Syracuse 15-9 in the opening round. That rest did not cost WG any bit of its playing edge. Instead, it appeared quite sharp as it tore through the Warriors in a 12-0 first half. When the Wildcats weren’t putting shots in the net, they were all working hard on defense, constantly preventing the Warriors from clearing the ball out of its own end. The diversity in WG’s attack also was present. Lauren Michaels led with five goals, with four others – Mel Murphy, Erica Geremia, Shannon Hawley and Julie Dussing – earning two goals apiece. Bre Hudgins and Emily Tripodi each had a goal and three assists, while Morgan Corso, Natalie Anderson, Mary Ferranti and Nicole Desko scored, too. Kara Datellas had two assists as Karlyn Tupper, Shelby Milne and Bridget Alberts had single assists. Now the Wildcats play F-M, whom it beat twice in the regular season by similar margins – 16-9 on April 6, then 16-10 on May 20. The Hornets needed a goal with Alex Murphy with 22.7 seconds left to edge Baldwinsville 10-9 in the other semifinal. The girls victory came hours after WG’s boys lacrosse team, the no. 2 seed and winners of the last eight sectional Class A titles, swamped no. 7 seed Central Square 15-1 in its quarterfinal game in Camillus. Having worked for eight days since its 8-7 loss to F-M (who has the top seed) on May 20, WG took a while to take charge, as it only led 2-0 through one period. But a five-goal second quarter made it 7-1, and the Wildcats’ defense, led by Joe Fletcher, Pat Brown and John Sabert, blanked the Red Hawks the rest of the way, Scott Sidnam earning eight saves. John Glesener and Corey Herrington, each with four assists to go with two goals, anchored the attack as Bob Gasparini earned four goals and Ian Farley found the net three times. Dylan Donahue picked up two goals and two assists as Matt Schattner and Brandon Dzwonkowski earned single tallies. Tim Barber also had two assists, with Casey Schattner and Dan Ginestro getting one assist apiece. In Tuesday’s Class A semifinal at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium, the Wildcats (14-3) face no. 6 seed Liverpool, who knocked off Baldwnisville 10-9 to get to this point. The winner gets F-M or Corcoran in Friday’s title game on that same CNS turf.
