A season ago, the Christian Brothers Academy girls soccer team came within a victory of its first-ever state championship. And the scary part is that just two seniors are gone from that 2009 squad, meaning that the Brothers are favored to at least repeat its Section III Class AA title, and perhaps do more. First comes the business of the regular season, which commenced Wednesday night at East Syracuse-Minoa as CBA took out the Spartans 6-0. The Brothers’ two main offensive threats, Alexis Koval and Caitlin McConnell, again proved too much for the Spartans’ defense to handle. Koval and McConnell finished with two goals apiece, with Koval adding an assist. Taylor Gait and Eva Gordon supplied the help, each finishing with one goal and one assist. ESM goalie Casie Auricchio kept it from getting worse as she finished with 16 saves. On the same day, Jamesville-DeWitt came right back from its 4-0 loss to Fayetteville-Manlius in the finals of its own tournament on Sept. 4 in a ferocious way, taking Fulton apart and nearly getting to double digits in a 9-1 victory to improve its record to 2-1. All game long, the Red Rams attacked, taking 31 shots at the Red Raiders and constantly converting as it got six unanswered goals in the second half. Tessa Devereaux found the net three times, adding an assist, with Jessica Holmes adding two goals. Emily Elbers, Olivia Ferlenda, Maddy Devereaux and Courtney Ellis took turns getting single goals. This whole neighborhood process continues next week as J-D first takes on ESM, then has its first of two showdowns with CBA at Alibrandi Stadium.
