ONONDAGA COUNTY – Still undefeated and perched atop the state Class B rankings, the Skaneateles boys soccer team turned back two challenges from Madison County before one arrived from Oswego County and caused some havoc.
First, it was Cazenovia arriving at Hyatt Stadium last Tuesday night and, while it was able to break a season-long shutout streak, the visiting Lakers could not overcome a quick start from the hosts in a 3-1 decision.
The duo of Tylar Moss and Owen Cheney continued to devastate opposing defenses. First it was Moss scoring off a feed from Cheney. Then the two reversed roles and Cheney scored to make it 2-0.
That’s where it stood until Moss netted his second goal early in the second half, assisted by Casey Kenan. With that 3-0 cushion, Skaneateles could afford surrendering a goal, which it did when Dan Millison converted for Cazenovia with 18 minutes left.
Then it was the Lakers against Chittenango on Thursday night, and Moss again set the tone when he twice scored in the first half, running his season total to 13.
David Peterscak, who assisted on one of those goals, found the net in the second half, and Skaneateles prevailed 3-0, overcoming 11 saves from Bears goalie Will Simmons.
None of this could have prepared Skaneateles for what happened against Central Square a day later, as a normally airtight Lakers defense fell apart, but it still did enough to outlast the Redhawks 7-5.
This was quite the showcase for Moss, who not only delivered three goals for a hat trick, but assisted every single time Cheney found the net during his four-goal outing.
For its part, Central Square got three goals from Tyler Colton and two goals from Bryce Koagel, with goalie Mickey Schanp recording 10 saves.
Chittenango had already faced Westhill last Monday, with the Warriors prevailing 3-1 largely due to a strong first half where it grabbed a 2–0 edge and halted the Bears’ seven-game unbeaten streak.
Josh Daberro, with one goal and one assist, led a well-balanced attack where Bohdan Centore and Emmet Starowicz also found the net.
J-E had broken through in last Tuesday’s game against Solvay, the Eagles topping the Bearcats 1-0 as it put one shot past goalie Jonathan Gonzalez Perez, who otherwise made 19 saves.
West Genesee entered the week at 3-6 and fell further back in last Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Cicero-North Syracuse, who got two goals from Sean Graves and another goal from Gagan Adikhari.
But the Wildcats did prevail 2-0 over Corcoran Thursday night, the games scoreless until the second half, when Tyler Wavercak and Chris Moser both netted goals. Assists went to Jadin Lyle and James Mungro.
Bishop Ludden was upended 2-0 by Bishop Grimes last Wednesday as the Cobras, who were 0-8-1 going into the game, avenged a 3-1 loss to the Gaelic Knights the week before. Joel Fasama had one goal for Grimes and assisted on the other, by Ricardo Morales.
A 2-1 defeat to Tully followed on Friday afternoon, Ludden seeing Mark Collins’ goal, assisted by Jack Marvin, negated when Ryan Rauber and Colden Ives converted for the Black Knights.
