In advance of two head-to-head meetings in November, girls soccer teams from East Syracuse Minoa and Jamesville-DeWitt both wanted to build their win totals.
But the Red Rams could not do so, its game last Thursday against Oswego pushed back when that school shut down athletic activities, a precaution after Oswego’s boys soccer team played Oct. 24 against a Baldwinsville side with a player who later tested positive for COVID-19.
ESM was more fortunate, able to face Cortland on that same Thursday night, with Leah Rehm continuing her torrid freshman campaign in a 5-0 shutout of the Purple Tigers.
Twice in the first half, Rehm scored, her 14th and 15th goals of the season, to produce a 2-0 advantage. When Cortland concentrated its defense on Rehm in the second half, three other Spartans – Lena Polcaro, Natalie Peterson and Jenna Hudgins – scored, with Gianna Coccagnia twice getting assists and Rehm adding an assist.
When J-D did get on the field Saturday to face Liverpool, it was the Rams’ first game in 11 days, and perhaps that rust affected its level of play as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Through 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, J-D could only generate a handful of close-up opportunities, limited to six shots, all stopped by Liverpool goalie Caroline Stevens
Fayetteville-Manlius was coming off a rough two-week stretch where it had lost to ESM and Cicero-North Syracuse and tied Liverpool, so it welcomed a good result last Tuesday when it beat West Genesee 3-1.
Against the same Wildcats side it handled 4-1 earlier in the month in Camillus, the Hornets got two goals from Lauren Clark and another from Chloe Hodge. Morgan Goodman twice got assists and Sophia TenEyck added an assist.
And now it awaited Friday’s showdown with Baldwinsville, whom it beat 2-0 in their initial encounter Oct. 12. The rematch was even more productive for the Hornets, who blasted the Bees 5-1.
The early portion was quite active, F-M getting out in front and B’ville answering with a goal from Hannah Mimas. But then the Hornets scored twice more before the game was 20 minutes old.
It stayed that way until the second half, when F-M pulled further away, helped by two goals from Ryan Dauksza to match Clark’s total. Hodge had the other goal, with Goodman getting two assists and single assists from Victoria Horton and Kendall Clark.
Christian Brothers Academy thrived last Tuesday as it roared past Chittenango 5-2 for its fourth consecutive victory Kennedy Paciaga and Bella Roberson led the way, each scoring twice as Kaily Campbell picked up CBA’s other goal.
A fifth straight win came Thursday as the Brothers topped Tully 3-1. Meanwhile, Bishop Grimes returned to action last Tuesday, engaged in a tight battle with Onondaga where the Cobras lost 3-2 to the Tigers.
Despite the 4-2 record OCS carried into the game, Jenna Sloan scored twice to keep the Cobras close and Saba Famasa made nine saves. Still, the Tigers prevailed as Vanessa Woolery scored twice and Avi Baker added a goal.
Manlius-Pebble Hill lost 6-0 to Cazenovia last Tuesday afternoon, the Trojans unable to contain a Lakers attack led by Lili Gavitt, who had three goals and one assist, and Katie Rajkowski, who scored twice.
