Many of the top girls tennis players at Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse would battle for top honors during last Tuesday’s Section III Division I tournament.
Since it was held on the Warriors’ home courts, Liverpool didn’t have to travel anywhere. Following a 24-hour postponement due to rain, action got underway, with the top four singles and doubles finishers advancing to this week’s state qualifier.
Julie Schewe was able to reach the semifinals and advance to the qualifier. In the first round, Schewe routed Auburn’s Lindsay Jarman 6-0, 6-1, and then in the quarterfinals swept past Central Square’s Stephanie Kubis 6-2, 6-0 before a 7-6, 6-2 loss to another Redhawks standout, Erin McCarthy, in the semifinals.
Erin Chambrone beat Keara Polovick (Fayetteville-Manlius) 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16, but needing one more win to advance to the qualifier, could not get in the quarterfinals, falling to McCarthy 7-6, 6-2. Giana LaValle lost her first-round match to Baldiwnsville’s Alina Minkova 6-3, 6-2.
Moving to doubles, another pair of Liverpool players got close to advancing. Meghan Blake and Valerie Morgans won their first-round match 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 over C-NS’s Ava Breitbeck and Jenna Wilson, but lost, 6-1, 7-6, to F-M’s Patrice Calancie and Martha Welker in the quarterfinals.
The Northstars had two other doubles teams in the field. Danielle Dottler and Lexi Pyke lost, 6-2, 6-0, to F-M’s Maddy Drapeau and Diana Polovick, while Hanna Costello and Vanessa Luangaphay had an opening-round loss to West Genesee’s Anastasia Mello and Phoebe Nelson.
