In the most decisive way possible, the Baldwinsville boys golf team moved closer to the first regular-season championship of the newly-minted Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division.
First place was on the line Tuesday afternoon when the Bees went to Woodcrest Golf Club to take on Fayetteville-Manlius. Both sides would play well, but the Bees’ depth in its lineup made the difference as it earned a 189-197 victory over the Hornets.
These same teams had met Sept. 1 at Timber Banks, and B’ville won there 201-207. Since then, both sides had gone undefeated, and each of them carried six-match win streaks into the rematch.
Maxwell Dec won the individual battle, shooting 35 for nine hole to edge the Hornets’ Kyle Gilroy, who had a 36. But B’ville took the lead when two of its golfers, Dan Reiser and Ryan Fecco, shot 38, a total just one F-M golfer, Sean Arthur, reached.
The getaway happened when Matt Shipman and Trevor Tooke each shot 39, and no other Hornets player broke 40, a number Ben Donohue shot as Tanner Glavin added a 42 and Anthony Patra got a 45.
Neither team looked ahead to the showdown as they both had matches the day before, F-M defeating Syracuse 195-221 while B’ville, taking on Liverpool at Timber Banks, breezed past the Warriors 194-210.
Dec, with a 35, beat out Donohue (37) for individual honors. Though Liverpool’s Spencer Baum had a 38, three Bees –Fecco, Tooke and Ryan Conley – each shot 41 to match the Warriors’ second-best round from Tyler Leatherwood. Jarrett Phinney had one of his best rounds of the season, posting a 43.
And even after that big win over F-M, B’ville did not cool down, returning to Timber Banks on Thursday afternoon and offering up yet another blistering team effort in a 184-216 romp over Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green side.
Now it was Donohue leading the way with a three-under-par 33, with Fecco also breaking par as he shot 34. Reiser stepped up with a 37 and Tooke produced a 39 ahead of the Northstars’ Brian Pellegrino, who led his side with a 40. Conley contributed a 41.
Having improved to 10-1 overall, B’ville hopes to continue its prime form in one more match Tuesday against C-NS Blue before preparing for the Section III Class AA tournament on Oct. 4 at Tuscarora Golf Club in Marcellus.
