Quite often, the victories that earn the most satisfaction are those attained through a major struggle or a comeback.
The Cazenovia girls volleyball team might attest to that point after Tuesday night’s match at Homer, where it rallied twice and prevailed in five sets over the Trojans to move its overall record to 9-1.
Homer came into this match with an 8-2 mark, sitting second in the OHSL Liberty American division behind Westhill. Cazenovia, who has the top spot in the Liberty National division, knew it was going to get tested, and promptly lost the first set 25-19 before dominating the second set 25-13 to pull even.’
A close third set was in doubt until the Trojans pulled it out, 25-23, but instead of discouraging the Lakers, it instead provided motivation to come back. In the fourth set, Cazenovia prevailed 25-18, and during the final set Homer never got close, Cazenovia putting together a 25-10 romp.
Danielle Tedesco got 17 kills, three aces and three blocks, with Molly Carges adding 15 kills, four aces, four blocks and four digs. Morgan Hodinger provided help on the front line with eight kills, but also joining Lauren Burbidge as they both produced 18 digs.
Lauren Lyons did most of the setting work as she got 35 assists, plus eight digs and two kills. Maleigha Ellithorpe had eight assists and seven digs, with Lindsay Lawson adding four kills and two blocks and Mairin Rogers adding three kills and three assists.
For Homer, Meleah Hartnett, earning 21 assists, fed a front line where Caley Cornwell earned nine kills, Gillian McEvoy had eight kills and 12 digs and Cary Trierweller had six kills. Deede Partigianoni had seven digs and four kills.
Another big match for Cazenovia looms next Thursday at Buckley Gym, when it hosts LaFayette, who is locked in a battle for the top spot in the OHSL Patriot division with Hannibal and Bishop Grimes.
