To the editor:
You may be aware that my husband, Steve Wells, is running for Congress, and is asking for your vote in the upcoming primary. This has been an unexpected adventure for our family, since until six months ago, Steve had never mentioned a desire to pursue any type of political career. You would think that kind of thing would come up when you have young kids and are planning your future!
Though it was a surprise, I understand why Steve decided to run. He is deeply patriotic. He cares about what Americans are experiencing in their daily lives – if they are able to find good jobs, pay their bills, and raise their families in safety. For the last eight years (until the campaign started), most evenings I would find him sitting in his chair reading the newspaper, and talking out loud to no one about how economy is moving in the wrong direction.
Steve relates what goes on in our lives to the lives of the people who work at his family business. If we get a doctor’s bill for one of our children, Steve thinks about his 1,000-plus employees and whether they can afford to pay their children’s medical bills. If the credit card statement comes, Steve thinks about his employees being able to save for retirement. He is a caring individual who is concerned about not just his own family, but all families.
Steve has never been a person to seek the spotlight, and I know he is motivated by a desire to help people and to strengthen our country.
Steve was a prosecutor in Texas, and I have always known him to be on the side of what is right and good. He is not the least bit self-serving. For Steve, going to Washington is not a way to advance his career. The opposite is true. His career – at his family business – will be put on hold. That is a sacrifice that his family members are willing to make to have a decent, caring, and smart person represent the 22nd district.
We believe that our friends and neighbors deserve a fair-minded, capable person representing their interests. If Steve wins, he will have to spend a lot of time away from our boys, but he will be working to improve the lives of everyone who lives in our district. We think that’s a sacrifice worth making.
Please join me in our civic duty, and vote on June 28. I know it feels like we already voted in the presidential primary, but one more trip to the polls is a small price to pay for great leadership. Please vote on June 28, and please vote for my husband, Steve Wells.
