CICERO — CNY Reads One Book is a community-wide reading program designed to promote reading, discovery, and sharing different perspectives by encouraging area residents to read the same book and participate in programs related to that book. The program is organized by the CNY Reads Consortium, a partnership between arts, education, and social service organizations throughout the region.
The CNY Reads One Book selection for this year is “Finding Dorothy” by New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Letts.
In “Finding Dorothy,” Letts explores the paths taken by two women separated by more than a generation and struggling for a voice in a world overshadowed by men. It’s a story of love, loss, inspiration, and perseverance from South Dakota to Hollywood.
Letts’ work of historical fiction weaves a tale of then-77-year-old Maud Gage Baum, daughter of women’s suffrage leader Matilda Joslyn Gage and wife of author L. Frank Baum.
Follow Maud as she recalls actress Judy Garland, her childhood with her mother, her experience as one of the first women in an Ivy League school, and her romance with Frank through their struggling prairie years that inspired “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”
“Finding Dorothy” is available from the library as an ebook, audiobook, or in large print. The OverDrive ebook will be available through March 31 without a waitlist.
After reading the book, “join the conversation” by attending NOPL’s Virtual Book Discussion at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 9. CNY Reads committee member Dianne Emmick will facilitate this discussion. Visit NOPL.org/events to register for this virtual event.
