The Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at Cicero was the first library in Onondaga County to host a Creative Aging Program when the Encore! Creative Aging Workshops began this past February. Professional instruction was provided to maturing adults interested in photography, painting, and writing through the Encore! workshops.
Students in the writing workshop in particular were so enthusiastic about the program that upon the conclusion of the workshop they formed a casual writing group that continues to meet each week.
The ‘Write Your Legacy’ Writers Group meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Monday at NOPL @ Cicero. This like-minded group of writers provides encouragement and writing support to individuals 50 and older who are interested in recording their memories, stories, and experiences.
“That is what makes this group truly unique,” said Jill Youngs, the manager of NOPL at Cicero. “Most of the other writing groups you’ll find focus on fiction — fantasy and mystery — but these individuals are very interested in non-fiction, in sharing their own legacy.”
Anyone interested in recording their experiences and stories is invited to attend the “Write Your Legacy” Writers Group.
As for the Encore! Creative Aging Program, the next series of workshops is currently being planned for our North Syracuse branch this fall. We look forward to bringing more artistic and educational opportunities to maturing adults in our local community. For a full listing of programs, see our events calendar on nopl.org.
