Jordan-Elbridge Middle School celebrated the learner profile trait, risk-taker, in the month of February. Risk-takers approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; they work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. They are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change, and are not afraid to stand up for what they believe to be right. These students were nominated by their peers for being positive risk-takers: 6th grade – Zoey Magid, 7th grade – Jordan Williams and 8th grade – Natalee Emig
Seventh grade teacher, Mrs. Giannettino, was also nominated for being a risk-taker by the classroom learning experiences she brings to her students every day.
JEMS also hosted a Black History Month Risk-Taker Contest in February. Students researched an African American who risked everything to stand up for what is right. They could create any representation showing the positive impact of that risk. Students submitted poetry, digital drawings, and even a podcast.
“We are proud of all the thoughtful work these students did to show an appreciation for the risks people have taken to make our world a better place,” said IB Program Coordinator Alexis Farnsworth.
The winner of the contest was 7th grader Addison Bard, who put together a beautiful tri-fold showing the impact of Harriet Tubman. Addison received some goodies, including a book about Harriet Tubman and a gift card to Barnes & Noble Bookstore.
During the month of March, JEMS celebrates the learner profile trait, thinker. Thinkers use critical and creative thinking skills to analyze and take responsible action on complex problems. They exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions. Look for our winning thinkers later this month. JEMS’ next academic contest will be to celebrate Earth Day in April.
