Students show support for Ukraine through storytelling

ELBRIDGE — Within their ELL class, JEDIS students are working through their feelings about the conflict in Ukraine through writing. Students are collaborating to tell a story of peace.

“Everyone has a part because cooperation is a huge part of our lives,” explained teacher Danuta Goldmann. “It’s important to show them that you can achieve way more when you work with other people.”

The story, titled “Paz,” takes place on a fictional island inhabited by ‘meanies’ and ‘greenies.’ In the story, the ‘meanies’ plot against the ‘greenies,’ but are eventually defeated through Peace Gas. In the end, everyone lives happily ever after.

“Students were inspired by different literary genres, including fairytales, folklore, Star Wars and other fiction works,” added Goldmann.

The idea was to learn about both writing and illustration, while also discussing and processing current events. Now that the story is complete, students will share their work with their pen pals in Rewal, Poland, as a way to show their support for Ukraine.
