East Syracuse Minoa School District is hosting its third annual districtwide Hour of Code event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, in the large cafeteria at the high school. This event is free and is open to all ESM students in grades K through 12. Students in grades K through 5 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Hour of Code began as a one-hour coding challenge to give students a fun first introduction to computer science and has become a global learning event, celebration and awareness event.
New this year is are codable robot stations hosted by each of the district’s four elementary schools. In addition, students from Pine Grove’s after school coding club will demonstrate computer games they have created using a block coding application called Scratch. Each participant will receive an Hour of Code Certificate, souvenir and get a chance at winning one of the many raffle prizes. Light refreshments will also be provided.
Space is limited. Registration for this event is required and can be submitted at esmschools.org/HourofCode
“From kindergarteners to seniors, this is a fun introduction to a potential career. There are more than 500,000 computing jobs open nationwide with a high starting salary,” said Becky Wenner, ESM Instructional Technology Specialist. “Younger students are excited to show parents their coding skills. Middle and high school students experiment as they design their own games and apps. Parents get to see their children engaged with and enthusiastic about computer coding.”
