Cazenovia College will be sending three students to the national political conventions this summer. Emily Kotnik and Justin Schmidt are set to attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, from July 10 to 22. Nicholas Stagnitti will go to the Democrat National Convention a week later in Philadelphia, Pa., from July 17 to 29. Each student will also participate in an academic program through The Washington Center.
The Washington Center gives students an inside perspective of the national political conventions. Participants from around the country are invited to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, while contributing to fieldwork, small-group meetings, panel discussions and other convention-related activities. Students have the opportunity to learn from academic instructors and briefings through thought-provoking discussions. They also participate in volunteer opportunities with organizations involved in the conventions.
This past fall, Cazenovia College students interested in attending the national political conventions submitted a letter of interest with a recommendation from a faculty or staff member to Interim President Margery A. Pinet, who is personally funding the students’ participation. Schmidt was nominated by Professor Roxy Spano and Fitness and Wellness Director William Houser, and Kotnik and Stagnitti were nominated by Professor John Livermore.
“I am proud to sponsor three Cazenovia College students for this once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Pinet. “I know they will gain knowledge of the U.S. political system; perhaps they will want to be representatives of their states and politically involved in the future.”
During the first week in each city, students experience the excitement of the convention preparations and become acquainted with the host city and key venues. They learn how the convention comes together, with events throughout the city contributing. Academic topics range from the nomination process to campaign finance and media coverage.
The second week is spent experiencing the convention as participant observers. Discussion topics include the keynote address, party factions, selection of the presidential and vice presidential nominees as well as campaign issues and strategies. To learn more visit: The Washington Center at twc.edu.
