George Haynes Bickford passed away on June 13, 2016, in Greensboro, VT, at the age of 93.
George was born in Springfield, VT, on Jan. 31, 1923, to parents George Floyd Bickford and Louetta (Haynes) Bickford. He grew up in Vermont, Connecticut and finally in Grafton, MA. He spent his summers in Greensboro, Vt., where he eventually retired to live full time after the death of his wife, Betty.
An avid Boy Scout, George loved the great outdoors. He completed high school at Peddie Prep in NJ and went on to MIT where he enlisted in the Navy during WWII.
George married Betty Sowles in 1950 and they made their home in the Syracuse area—first in Fayetteville and then Cazenovia—where George worked for Carrier Air Conditioning. The family also spent several years in the Rochester area, where George worked for Taylor Instruments before returning to Carrier.
George is survived by his sister, Bea Hicock , her husband Burt, and her family; his children: Susan of Mountain View, CA; Palma and husband, Douglas Steely ,of Marblehead, MA; Robert and wife, Elizabeth Bickford, of Ashland, VA; and granddaughter Erin Steely of Arlington, MA.
