A Morrisville man was arrested on July 13 after allegedly shooting a nine-year-old with a BB gun after playing a game with him in which they would shoot one another.
On July 13, Madison County Sheriff’s Office Investigators arrested Edward S. Highers, 26, of Morrisville, and charged him with assault in the first degree (class B felony), reckless endangerment in the first degree (class D felony) and endangering the welfare of a child (class A misdemeanor).
On July 12, shortly after 10 p.m., deputies responded to the Hamilton Hospital for a report of a child that had been shot to the chest with a BB gun. Following an investigation into incident, it was discovered that Highers had shot the nine-year-old boy with a BB gun while playing a game with him called “one pump,” in which they would take turns pumping the BB gun and then shooting one another.
On one occasion, Highers pumped the gun several times and shot the boy in the chest, causing the BB to become lodged inside the boy’s skin next to his heart.
The boy was transported to Hamilton Hospital where he was deemed to be in critical condition, and was then transported to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse.
At this time the child is still in the hospital being treated for the injury.
Highers was arraigned at The Town of Hamilton Court and remanded to the Madison County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. Highers is scheduled to return to court on July 16 to answer the charges.
