SKANEATELES — At their June 28 meeting, the Skaneateles Lions Club honored two Skaneateles residents for their contributions in serving the community.
Every year the Lions award five scholarships to Skaneateles High seniors.
This year the prestigious “We Serve” award was earned by Fiona Foley.
During her high school years spent in three different countries, Foley became deeply involved in her communities, leading several organizations and meaningful projects.
Foley will be continuing her education at SUNY Geneseo.
The Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award was established in 1993, to honor outstanding Lions, non-Lions, or organizations that perform exemplary service to a club, district or community.
These honorees possess the highest examples of Lionistic character, ideals, purpose and service.
This year the club awarded the Uplinger to Lion Dr. Casimir (Casey) Bobowski. Over his 36 years of membership, Bobowski has been central to the continuity and charitable services of the Skaneateles Lions Club.
As an optometrist, Bobowski for many years operated his own practice and in evenings and weekends led or helped with many Lions Club fund raising events and service functions, including providing eye exams without charge to residents unable to pay.
Lions International is the largest service organization in the world.
Through the Community Band Songbook, the Holiday Citrus Sale, our New Year’s Day Resolution Walk/Run and other events, the Skaneateles Lions Club is able to donate to a significant number of local charitable causes, as well as student scholarships.
