Over the past several weeks, we have all gotten used to a new reality as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Essential workers are working longer hours under greater stress. Some of us are now working from home. Some of us have been laid off or furloughed. Gatherings and celebrations are canceled or postponed indefinitely. State and federal health officials urge the use of facial covering in public and maintaining social distancing of six feet. And, we appear to be entering a prolonged economic recession.
To state the obvious: this is not easy. In times of health and economic uncertainty, we rely on social networks and familiar customs for strength. But we are unable to treat this stress the same way. Social networks have been interrupted. School, celebrations, and sporting events have been canceled or postponed.
We understand that the combination of weeks of social distancing, progress being made against Covid-19 statewide, and warmer weather approaching, there will be an increasing temptation to ignore distancing and mask guidelines. Please resist this temptation. We cannot, as a community, take our collective foot off the gas. The population of New Yorkers who have died from Covid-19 is roughly the same as the population of Cortland. There is no specific treatment, and we are many months away from a vaccine. Social distancing is our best weapon against this virus. We owe it to ourselves and our neighbors to maintain our hard-fought progress.
We can expect to see more people outside with the warmer weather, and it is important to get outside for exercise and for peace of mind. At this point, the Village has no intention of closing its parks. We believe that the rejuvenation, relaxation, and solace that can be found by looking out at the lake is a critical component to our collective well-being. However, we must be respectful of the space and health of others as we use public spaces. This means washing hands, wearing a mask, staying 6 feet apart in public and asking others to do the same. The Village Board will do our best to do this and we ask everyone to do their part.
Finally, please be aware that if you are having trouble dealing with the stress of Covid-19, you are not alone. Mental health is critical. The New York State Department of Health has established an emotional support line at 1-844-863-9314. Resources are available through the Onondaga County Office of Mental Health Services at

Please contact the Village with any questions or concerns. Remember who you are doing this for. Stay safe. Be well.
